| Perhaps one of the most celebrated first ladies in the history of this country, the late Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis is remembered today on the anniversary of her 84th birthday. "); } The fashion-conscious first lady charmed during her time at the White House and soon solidified her status as an everlasting American icon. Jackie was an ambitious first lady, undergoing her famous White House restoration project, acting as ambassador during her travels with her husband, and perhaps most important (to her, at least), raising her children. According to the website of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, Jackie once told a reporter,
The image of the bloodstained first lady left a lasting imprint on America's memory when President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. After she remarried five years later, First Lady Jackie Kennedy morphed into to NYC staple Jackie O and gracefully ushered in a new chapter of her life, still closely holding the almost rabid attention of the American people, not to mention the paparazzi, who documented her now-iconic NYC life. A simple Amazon search of "Jackie Kennedy" will show you: we simply can't seem to get enough of Jackie style (as evidenced by the slideshow above). Indeed, it's no secret that Jackie is the quintessential American fashion icon and is perhaps best remembered and celebrated for the way she dressed. The former first lady's elegant, seemingly effortless style continues to inspire women across the globe, close to 20 years after her death. In this writer's opinion, true style doesn't require the help of high profile designer names (though it certainly does not hurt) and Jackie O is no exception. According to Amanda McGowan here, however, Jackie had quite expensive taste and favored European designers above all others, including Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga. Even into her fifties and sixties, Jackie remained just as elegant as she was as First Lady of the United States. She continued working until her death. In January 1994, the former first lady was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Four months later on May 19, she died in her sleep two months before her 65th birthday.
